You Are Here
The GPS app on my phone is one I use a lot. I love it. I know I can get anywhere I need to go, even if Iâve never been there before. I simply pull it up, plug in the address of my destination and watch it navigate the most efficient route for me to take. It makes me feel safer, looking down at the little blue dot that represents me, as it pulses with movement, showing me each turn to take. I know exactly where I am and exactly where I need to go because I have a satellite perspective that is above the winding streets and crazy traffic. Wouldnât that satellite perspective be a great thing for life as wellâsomething that allowed us to look at ourselves from a different perspective and know exactly where we are in life and how far we have to go to get to the person we want to be? There is such a tool, but for many it can be difficult to find and even more difficult to use. But for us to continue this battle of breaking free we need to learn what it is and how to harness the power it can bring us. The tool is self-awareness.
Self-Awareness
Having self-awareness is having a correct view of who you are. It is what is true about yourself. Self-awareness is the first step for all growth and development. You canât change or move forward until you first know where you are. One of the first places we can look for self-awareness is in the mirror. If youâre not too lazy or too cool do me a favor and go look in the mirror right now. If you donât want to do it right now, do it the next time youâre in the bathroom, or a place with a mirror. Go ahead. Look at your reflection. Stare at yourself. What do you see? Do you know who are you? What are your strengths and weaknesses? What type of personality do you have? Are you a rule follower or a free spirit? A lover or a fighter? Do you like who you are? What do you like? What do you not like? Iâm not just talking about your appearance. What do you feel when you look at yourself? Do you feel shame? Depression? Joy? Are you proud of yourself or disappointed? Is it hard for you to look at yourself so intently? Are you able to be honest with yourself?
The reflection of a mirror is something we take for granted today. Back in the late 1200s glass manufacturers created a special group called The Glassmakers Guild for the purpose of safeguarding the secrets of the mirror-making trade and its profitability.
